Judging Process

All entries will be automatically categorised into five “regions”.

  1. New South Wales & Australian Capital Territory
  2. Victoria
  3. South Australia & Tasmania
  4. Western Australia & Northern Territory
  5. Queensland

Judges will be searching for the best overall look (colour, cut, style, make-up, fashion and photography) with the obvious focus being on the hair.

How to

Catch the judges eye

THE COLOUR
  • On the model should be technically well-executed and be a modern and beautiful interpretation of upcoming trends showcasing the expertise and ability of the colourist to create a unique look.
  • Will be the overriding factor in any decision making process
THE HAIR
  • Can be any length, texture or colour but has to be inspirational and show skill in the colour, style/cut and finish.
  • Must be in optimal condition – if the hair is in bad condition the model will not be considered as a Grand Finalist
  • Must suit the model’s face and bone structure
THE CUT/STYLE
  • If featured, must show exceptional technical skill
THE FINISH
  • On the hair must be accomplished with an appropriate amount of product, and the correct choice of product
THE CLOTHES STYLING & MAKEUP
  • Should enhance and complement the overall look that the colourist and hair stylist have created
THE MODEL
  • Does not have to be professional but they have to be confident, self-assured, ‘own’ their look and walk convincingly down the catwalk
REMEMBER
  • No up-dos
  • No wigs, extensions or hair pieces to be used.

International Judges

Ken Picton

International Judge

Award-winning hairdresser Ken Picton heads up the destination salon in Wales as well as leading shows and seminars in front of thousands, working backstage on fashion shows and producing imagery that’s seen around the world. His accolades include 3-times Wales Hairdresser of the Year and Hall of Fame Member; British Colourist of the Year and numerous image of the year awards. The salon looks after a host of TV and sports stars and also works on LFW shows every season. A Key Ambassador for L’Oréal Professionnel, Kérastase and Shu Uemura, Ken has travelled around the world educating and is a L’Oreal Portfolio member.

Paul Dennison

International Judge

A former winner of Colourist of the Year at the British Hairdressing Awards, Paul Dennison is Technical Director with the Ken Picton art team, and a regular L’Oreal Professionnel judge. Paul is a Guest Artist and 20:20 member and has worked on one of the Colour Trophy’s famed opening shows. A Fellowship for British Hairdressing colour mentor, Paul is a fabulous educator and has presented shows and seminars around the word including Switzerland, Greece, Australia, Indonesia, Spain, Chilie, Peru and India. Today Paul enjoys running a busy clientele in the salon, is a L’Oréal Colour Specialist and also works on photographic shoots.

Jack Howard

International Judge

Jack Howard, L’Oreal Professionnel UK Colour Spokesperson and International hair colourist to the likes of Gillian Anderson, Poppy Delevingne, Suki Waterhouse and Abbey Clancy is based at Paul Edmonds London under the title ‘Jack Howard at Paul Edmonds’. Jack, widely credited with bringing Balayage to the UK, teaches a hugely popular course for L’Oreal Professionnel as well as privately for numerous high profile salons across the world. He is the Social Media Ambassador for the National Hairdressing Council. The Jack Howard brand currently includes a range of Balayage hair extensions for Beauty Works, and education courses. Jack has also been chosen by L'Oréal Professional Products Division as one of the industry's elite colourists to partner with as a 20:20 Colour artist.

Jamie Brooks

Shelley Gregory

Shelley Gregory is a native of Las Vegas and based there as a Colourist/Stylist. She has been perfecting her craft for over 15 years, recently gaining recognition and going viral with her pastel hair creations. See her work at shelleygregoryhair.com and on Instagram @shelleygregoryhair.

Matthew Collins

Matthew Collins is a Canadian born hair Stylist and Colourist, with a career spanning more than 12 years. As an International L’Oréal Professionnel and Canadian Dyson Brand Ambassador, Matthew has worked regularly on the hair teams for Paris and Toronto Fashion Weeks. Matthew’s dedication to his work led him to be awarded L’Oréal Professionnel’s Canadian Runway Stylist of the Year. His work, advice and tips have been featured in many online and print publications including vogue.com, People, Elle Magazines and many more. Celebrity clients have included Gigi Hadid, Cody Simpson and Cynthia Nixon just to name a few.

Justin Pace

Justin Pace is regarded as one of Australia's leading colourists. With over 25 years of technical experience and expertise, Justin is a highly creative individual guided by natural instincts. Justin is passionate about his craft and blends unparalleled finesse with an exceptional eye for colour and detail.

With many achievements under his belt including Hair Expo Colourist of the Year Winner 2014 and Finalist in 2013, Australian Colour Award Winner 2012/2011 and International Colour Awards Finalist 2012/2011, plus named one of Australia's Top Colourists by Harper's Bazaar magazine, Justin’s success in a competitive industry means his work is continually sought after for publication in the latest hair and fashion journals.

In recent years, Justin has changed his focus from not only competing in industry events to mentoring and judging them, doing so has allowed him to give back to the future of hairdressing.

Justin is both Owner/Creative Director of his eponymous salon Papas and Pace, plus a Redken National and International Global Artist, the latter permitting him to share his enthusiasm for strong colour and technical brilliance with an international audience.

Frank Apostolopoulos

BIBA Creative Director, and multiple salon owner, Frank Apostolopoulos, has been awarded the title of Australian Hairdresser of the Year a monumental five times. His passion for precision cutting, education, fashion and photography has seen Frank emerge as not only one of Australia’s most revered hairdressers but one who is also quickly gaining recognition on the global stage.

Frank’s talent was evident early in life, personally inducted by BIBA owner Pavlos Divitaris into the leading salon culture at the ripe age of 15. Over the next 20 years, he’s grown to be a driving force behind BIBA, forging an army of salons distinguishable by a somewhat bold take on hairdressing with more than a touch of Frank’s penchant for pushing the creative envelope. Such a career has not been confined to the world of BIBA, travelling extensively around Australia and internationally in the past as a Wella Australia and New Zealand Creative Director, GHD Ambassador, Mizutani Australia Ambassador and a go-to stylist for some of the most avant-garde and prestigious projects.

Frank has also opened a new salon under his own name BYFRANK in South Yarra

Matt Clements

National Judge

Owner and Director of The Assembly Hair, Matt Clements, exudes a very unique air of intense creativity. Fuelled by an absolute dedication to deliver originality and innovation in all of his work, Matt is a true believer in pushing the boundaries of conventional colour design and techniques. He is also dedicated to pursuing authentic style inventions whilst delivering commercial reality on the salon floor.

With over 30-years industry experience and a slew of accolades under his belt, including four times Australian Colour Technician of the Year, Matt joined industry stalwart Benni Tognini in 1990 at the Queensland salon powerhouse Togninis. From this high performing environment, Matt developed a fervent passion for education and was selected to join Benni for the first ever Redken Symposium in 1993 held in Las Vegas.

Matt is held in high regard as a stand out colour technician with world-class ability, appointed a Global Colour Ambassador for a major hair brand since 2010. His work is strong, fashion-forward and constantly pushing the boundaries of conventional hair colour.

Damien Rinaldo

National Judge

Damien Rinaldo has established himself as a one of Australia’s most innovative hairdressers after winning L’Oreal Colour Trophy and AHFA Australian Hairdresser of the Year three times, including the 2018 award.

Having mastered the craft, Damien loves nothing more than pushing the boundaries with cutting and passing techniques onto others through education and editorial shoots.

Passionate about the broader industry and always one to think outside the box, Damien’s priority these days is to attract talented people to the industry.

“I want to lead with love, not fear,” he said. “I am a big advocate for salons building great teams and treating staff well.”

In keeping with the salon culture set by his creativity, Damien’s salon Boris the Cuttery in Adelaide, won Hair Expo’s 2014 Best New Salon Design Award for its contemporary and quirky integrated brand design.

Mary Uva

A prolific influence in the Australian hairdressing industry, Marie Uva is sitting at the helm of an empire built on creativity, integrity, education and refined business acumen. The Melbourne-born style muse has left no opportunity unturned throughout, what can only be described as, a rich two decades in the business of hair. 

Since launching UVA Salon in 2013, Marie has worn many hats and inspired a generation of hair professionals. Most recently Marie and her salon team at UVA Salon have gone on to take out the title of Hair Expo’s Australian Team Salon of the Year Award 2018. Evident through six consecutive Hair Expo Colour Technician of the Year finalist positions, Marie’s true talent is in seamless and unsuspecting colour blends. However, the visionary’s styling skills have welcomed not only the unprecedented double gong of AHFA Colourist of the Year 2009 and AHFA Victorian Hairdresser of the Year 2009, but has also gained her an expansive list of celebrity clientele including the likes of Gigi Hadid, Rita Ora, Rachel Zoe and Megan Gale. A true genius when it comes to intricate up-styles (the girl can ‘pony’), it’s the famous UVA Blowave and luxury beach texture that has earned Marie an enviable following of Melbourne ‘it’ girls Nadia Bartel and Bec Judd. This has allowed Marie to create their hair colour and design for some of the city’s largest, media frenzied events including the Logies and the Brownlow Awards. 

Despite huge celebrity demand Marie refuses to lose touch with the heart of an industry that has treated her so well. No stranger to global and national ambassadorship roles, Maria has partnered with the industry’s most high-end brands including WELLA, GHD and Amazing Hair Australia. Marie has had a long standing relationship with Wella Professionals as the Australian and NZ Wella Creative Director as well as leading some of Melbourne’s most respected education program.

Brodie Lee Tsiknaris

Brodie Lee is a well-known name in the Australian hair industry; renowned for her beautiful work, down to earth education and stellar line up of both Australian and international awards. These included, 2018 HAIR EXPO QLD Hairdresser of the year, 2018/2017 QLD Salon of the year, Sebastian International finalist, AIPP International finalist, 2017 AHFA QLD hairdresser of year and 2017 AHIA Salon owner of the year.

Brodie has grown an incredible salon business and her passion for Generation Y has helped Brodie to build a young, energetic and sophisticated team. She has been lucky enough to travel internationally with her craft, working with some of the biggest names in the industry. Brodie’s work has been brought to life on the runway at fashion week in Australia, New York and Europe; most recently hair directing the Thomas Puttick show at MBFW. Brodie was also Creative Director for this year’s 2018 HOTSHOTS award-winning team.

Brodie is equally at home in her salon ROKSTAR, located in Brisbane’s uber cool, West End. ROKSTAR now boasts the titles of AHIA QLD Salon of the year 2018/2017, Australian Customer care 2018, 2017 AHIA In Salon Training Award and 2016 AHIA Salon Design of the Year. Along with regularly training her staff at ROKSTAR, Brodie is a sought out Educator working closely with Sebastian, GHD and teaching and mentoring stylists in salons. She is extremely passionate about sharing her skill with the future of the industry. 

Freda Rossidis

Mr. Smith Creative Director, Freda Rossidis is one of Australia’s leading stylists with over 20 years’ experience working across runway, editorial, advertising, TV and celebrity styling.

Freda is a mainstay on the international fashion week circuit on team Sam McKnight, as well as assisting the likes of Guido, Duffy James Pecis, Anthony Turner and Christian Houtenbos. Working alongside some of the largest fashion houses in the world, Freda has regularly assisted on shows for Dior, Prada, Chanel, Fendi, Rick Owens, Tom Ford, Givenchy, Balmain, Dolce & Gabbana, Hermes, Max Mara, Missoni, Ferragamo, A.P.C Paris, Dries Van Noten and Burberry, to name a few. In addition to this, Freda has and continues to direct shows at New York Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week and Paris Men’s Fashion Week.

Freda’s work has appeared on the covers and pages of international magazines including Elle, Jalouse magazine, Marie Claire, Grazia, Black, InStyle, Noise, Remix, Stellar, FashionTrend and Jessica magazine.

With an aesthetic that is editorially driven Freda has developed a reputation as a go-to stylist for leading brands and celebrities.

Sheree Knoble

The art of hair colour has had a hold of Sheree’s heart since, at the age of 21, she put down her scissors to focus exclusively on developing her colour expertise. In the years since, Sheree has foiled, balayage, and zone-toned her way to building a reputation as the authority on blonde and lived-in colour in Australia.

In 2015, after spending years learning from some of the industry greats, Sheree spread her wings opening her own rapidly expanding salon, Bixie Colour.

Together with her hand-picked team of expert colourists, cutters and stylists, Sheree creates and innovates lived-in perfection every day.

The birth of Bixie was a career highlight for Sheree and more amazing opportunities have followed in the years since. In 2016, Sheree joined the elite ranks of Redken’s Artistic Team and was selected to represent the brand as the ambassador of Redken’s game-changing miracle product pH-Bonder. In 2017, Sheree was also named Ambassador for dream foils, Foil Me Foils.

Sheree’s bond with Redken also took her to Las Vegas to be a part of the Grand Opening Team for Redken Symposium 2017. There she worked with the first ever International Redken artistic team, before travelling to New York in 2017 to be a part of their International Academy Artist’s program. Later in 2017, Sheree was made a Redken Artist Educator and most recently Sheree and her Education team headed to the UK and Amsterdam to share her tips and tricks for nailing seamless Aussie blonde.
