Judging Process

All entries will be automatically categorised into five “regions”.

  1. New South Wales & Australian Capital Territory
  2. Victoria
  3. South Australia & Tasmania
  4. Western Australia & Northern Territory
  5. Queensland

Judges will be searching for the best overall look (colour, cut, style, make-up, fashion and photography) with the obvious focus being on the hair.

How to

Catch the judges eye

  • On the model should be technically well-executed and be a modern and beautiful interpretation of upcoming trends showcasing the expertise and ability of the colourist to create a unique look.
  • Will be the overriding factor in any decision making process
  • Can be any length, texture or colour but has to be inspirational and show skill in the colour, style/cut and finish.
  • Must be in optimal condition – if the hair is in bad condition the model will not be considered as a Grand Finalist
  • Must suit the model’s face and bone structure
  • If featured, must show exceptional technical skill
  • On the hair must be accomplished with an appropriate amount of product, and the correct choice of product
  • Should enhance and complement the overall look that the colourist and hair stylist have created
  • Does not have to be professional but they have to be confident, self-assured, ‘own’ their look and walk convincingly down the catwalk
  • No up-dos
  • No wigs, extensions or hair pieces to be used.

Paul Dennison

International Judge

Colour Director at Ken Picton Salon, Paul & Ken are winners of the British Colour Technician of the Year and travel the world doing shows and seminars.

Paul’s passion for colour started in 1996 after leaving school and joining a Cardiff salon where he completed his colour training and reached the position of Head of Colour.

He then moved to London, working as a colourist in the renowned flagship Aveda salon in Covent Garden, working alongside the legendary Antoinette Beenders.

Paul moved back to Cardiff in September 2011 to join the Ken Picton Salon, passing the L’Oréal Colour Specialist Degree after a 3-month intensive course and working on shows and shoots.

Paul is in demand for education both in the UK & Internationally, and has an incredible passion for colour; with celebrity clients include Ruth Jones and many of the BBC’s actors and actresses.

Paul is regularly asked to judge competitions such as the L’Oréal Colour Trophy and is also currently mentoring the Colour team with the Fellowship of British hairdressing.

He is one of the hottest names to watch in the hairdressing industry with his recent Evening of Colour, a complete sell-out in London.

Matthew Collins

International Judge

Matthew Collins is a Canadian born hair stylist now located full time in Los Angeles, with a career spanning more than 16 years.

Collins is an international L’Oreal Professionnel and Dyson #supersonic Canadian brand ambassador. He regularly travels internationally teaching his craft. He has worked with hair teams for fashion weeks around the world. Collin’s dedicated to his work led him to be awarded L’Oreal Professionnel’s ‘Canadian Runway Stylist of the Year.’

His work, advice and tips have been featured in many online and print publications such as Vogue.com, Vanity Fair, People, Elle Canada, Elle Serbia, Fashion, IO Donna, and many other publications. Collins’ celebrity clients have included Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss, Cindy Crawford, Paris Jackson, Priyanka Chopra, Hailey Bieber, Bryce Dallas Howard, Hannah Simone and Adelaide Kane.

Matthew is the hair expert on CTV’s The Social, and Etalk in Canada. He has styled for many events like the Oscars, Golden Globes, Teen Choice Awards, Critics Choice Awards, and the I Heart Radio awards. He also Co-founded an advanced Beauty training academy called The Good Ones Academy.

Min Kim

International Judge

Min Kim is a premier balayage educator, Loreal Professionnel international artist and resident master color specialist at NYC’s Butterfly Studio Salon.

Min specializes in color correction and in painting natural colors that grow out softly and gracefully with balayage.

Min’s signature precision application transforms hair into the #beachglowhair inspired from her childhood, growing up on the beach.

Min has created looks for major global trend and color campaigns for Loreal Professionnel, in addition to creating content that trains hairdressers globally.

Min’s attention to detail, natural eye for color and passion for the craft is why she is a celebrity favorite, trusted by clients and a sought after beauty influencer all over the world.

Laurent Decreton

With 25 years of experience, L’Oréal Hairstyling Ambassador and Artistic Director at Haute Coiffure Francaise, Laurent Decreton has styled hair for the best top models and also taken part in haute couture fashion shows for Chanel, Yves Saint-Laurent, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Jean-Louis Scherrer and Hanae Mori in partnership with the Alexandre de Paris team.

Recognized French Hairstylist Champion, not to mention awards at both European and worldwide level, he has become definite fixture on the international hairdressing scene.

An acknowledged fashion expert, he has succeeded in establishing himself as hairstyle creator at the most distinguished fashion shows, Fashion Week Paris, Cannes Festival.

He travels the world sharing and diffusing his expertise internationally by means of the hairdressing shows. Supported by his team of professionals, his experience, technique, domain of choice and personality are his key assets, giving Laurent Decreton the privilege of revealing a face and enhancing it.

Adam Reed

Founding Partner and Director of Percy & Reed, one of London’s coolest salons, Adam Reed is one of Britain’s foremost hairdressers.

Adam's work has taken him all over the world, working with some of the world's fashion and beauty icons. It's not all about name-dropping, but Diane Kruger, Sophie Dahl, Patsy Kensit, Rachel Stevens, Mel C, the Sugerbabes and a few VIP beauty editors from Glamour, Elle and Grazia are clients - and when they've got a hair feature coming up, he's the one they call. As well as specialising in cutting and styling super luxe hair, Adam is also a colourist, creating beautiful feminine hair which has won him a devout celebrity following.

Adam takes his energy and inspiration from the fast-paced, buzzing atmosphere of fashion shows and photo-shoots. He is a walking, talking text book of fashion history and uses his knowledge to develop modern takes on classic styles. But he also uses his twenty years of top salon experience to help others, working hard to train the next generation of stylists from around the world.

Mario Charalambous

Mario completed his training before joining the team at Harrods Hair & Beauty Salon in 1989 as their youngest stylist. Here he met and worked with Hellen Ward. After a working sabbatical in Australia, Mario transferred to the Elizabeth Arden salon in Piccadilly before returning to work at Richard Ward’s first salon in 1994, being promoted to Technical Director in 2001. Passionate about his department, Mario is both forward thinking and motivated to lead the way in colour and technical innovations within the salon, introducing new and revolutionary services. His near encyclopedic technical knowledge was evident when he received one of the highest pass marks in his L’Oréal Colour Specialist Degree and he has worked with L’Oréal Professionnel on colour Product Development.

A vital and integral part of the salon’s success, Mario trains, educates, mentors and manages his team and services his huge and loyal clientele. A well respected industry specialist Mario now educates and shares his knowledge through the courses he teaches at L’ Oreal Academies nationwide and judges major technical competitions such as the L’Oréal Colour Trophy.

Renowned in the hairdressing Industry as one of the most respected colourists and technicians, Mario’s unsurpassed expertise ensures the Richard Ward technical team remain at the forefront of their craft.

Jason Miller

International Judge

In his extensive role as International Creative and Artistic Director, along with India, Jason Miller has a consistent quality, style and energy at the leading edge of hairdressing and is regarded as one of the UK’s most influential hair designers. With strength and passion he creates original and individualistic work that is presented around the globe. He commands an extensive and varied clientele list whilst playing an integral part in the running and development of the company’s successful 5-salon business in Edinburgh. Inspired by fashion, photography and art Jason’s high standards of creativity and style ensure that the hairdressing industry in the UK continues to be recognized as the best in the world.

Frequently called upon to judge major industry events and competitions including the L’Oreal’s Colour Trophy (home and abroad), L’Oreal’s Talent Spotting, the British and Irish Hairdressing Awards and CreativeHEAD’s Most Wanted Awards, Jason is also in demand for quotes and predictions by many of the UK’s leading hair and beauty magazines and consumer titles.

Karen Dodds

International Judge

Multi-award winning salon at the forefront of the British hairdressing industry, Cutting Room Creative, is fronted by three times Northern Winner of the British Hairdressing Awards, Karen Dodds.

Karen and Charles Dodds head the Cutting Room Creative team as Creative Directors. Karen is a successful award winner, who, together with Charles, won the title of North Western Hairdresser of the Year in 2002, 2003 and 2004 resulting with their induction in to the British Hairdressing Hall of Fame in 2005. They have also won the Northern region of the L'Oreal Colour Trophy three times.

Karen has also been involved in some spectacular show work, having been on stage at the Royal Albert Hall after winning the Visionary Award in 2004. Her passion and creativity echoes through the entire Cutting Room Creative team who her & Charles lead and inspire.
